‘We move to the third potential in the splenic center which is the 18th gate, the gate of correction, where we work on what has been spoilt. It is part of the channel of insatiability. The keyword here is the awareness of what is vital or not. If the correction is not going to bring you a sense of value, if it is not vital, leave it alone. The awareness potential is to perfect via concentration. This is the place of salt in the body. It is where we store all of this possibility for correction.
The 18th hexagram is a related to the Oedipus and Electra complex because of its fear, the fear of authority. The first authorities we all meet are our parents. This is a natural place for this struggle for authority: the conflict between the male and the female and the conflict between same sexes in the family structure, this challenge of authority, this generation gap that is here in the 18th gate.
The heading above the lines in the Rave I’Ching: The vigilance and determination to uphold and defend basic and fundamental human rights. It is my standard joke about people having the 18th gate who come up to me and say, “Ra, you should not smoke.” I answer, “You mean that is true for everybody on earth?” and they say, “Yes”. This is a collective experience. This is collective correction.
One of the things to recognize about any kind of collective gate: don’t take it personally. So many people with the 18th gate, when you say to them, “You did a wonderful job,” they say, “No. I could have done this. I could have done that.” It is not personal. It is a process.’

Biology
Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system plays a major role in the body’s immune system, as the primary site for cells relating to adaptive immune system including T-cells and B-cells.
Cells in the lymphatic system react to antigens presented or found by the cells directly or by other dendritic cells.
When an antigen is recognized, an immunological cascade begins involving the activation and recruitment of more and more cells, the production of antibodies and cytokines and the recruitment of other immunological cells such as macrophages.
Salt
The human body needs sodium from salt for nerve impulses, muscle contractions, and maintaining water balance. Sodium is crucial for the lymphatic system’s ability to regulate fluid balance and remove waste by stimulating lymphangiogenesis, or the growth of new lymphatic vessels, which helps clear excess sodium from tissues and contributes to fluid homeostasis and blood pressure regulation. Sodium also acts as a key electrolyte for overall lymphatic function, with sodium deficiency slowing lymphatic flow and weakening immune responses.
Potential
To have awareness of what is vital or not.
The English word “vital” comes from the Latin word vītālis, which means “of or relating to life” or “life-giving”. This, in turn, comes from the Latin word vīta, meaning “life”. The word was borrowed into English from Latin and means something that is essential or necessary for life, or full of spirit and energy.
Gate 18 is about working on what has been ‘spoiled,’ and it is all about creating collective patterns that provide the most vital future. For example, humans eat every day. We have corrected and perfected the process of eating since the beginning of time, and we know that we do not want to eat spoiled food. It’s not life-giving, and in fact, it has the potential to make us sick. We have learned this logically as a group, having observed how spoiled food affects the vitality of people who eat it.
We have created patterns to help keep food from spoiling by preserving it, using containers of different materials, freezing it, etc. We work together to follow these patterns to save our health, food, time, and energy.
Cross of Planning Application
James L. Kraft patented the first U.S. process for canned cheese in 1916, developing a method to sterilize cheese for long-term storage and mass consumption. Before this point in time, American store clerks regularly cut mold off the edges of cheese before selling it to customers, leaving them to deal with its very low shelf life.
Kraft’s own brother told him that revolutionizing cheese was a long shot because the process of making it was almost 10,000 years old, and had never been improved. However, James had years of experience with cheese, and he was ready to experiment with his depth. By the time he had a viable product three years later, it was put to massive use, becoming a staple for U.S. soldiers during World War 1.
Let’s take a moment to be thankful that James didn’t take his brother’s doubt personally lol!
Fear of Authority
The fear of Authority is rooted in judgment, grounded in opinion, and oftentimes built in childhood. When we identify with our judgements and opinions, we can only compare ourselves to others. We may undermine ourselves, feeling inferior, blindly following others whom we perceive are ‘above us.’ Or we may undermine others, feeling superior, blindly blaming them for not sharing our opinions or living up to our mental standards.
One of my favorite examples of this can be seen in the way culture impacts aviation safety by shaping team dynamics, communication, and decision-making through power distance and individualism, leading to potential risks when subordinates hesitate to question superiors or provide critical information. To mitigate these risks, organizations must foster a strong safety culture rooted in leadership, open reporting, a learning environment, and a just culture that prioritizes safety.
To put it simply, if a co-pilot has a deep-seated fear of authority, they will not share negative observations with the captain (at the expense of all parties).
And it looks the same way in our personal lives. You can ask yourself:
What or who makes me feel inferior or superior?
Do I know what healthy vs. unhealthy authority looks like? Is there a difference in motivation or balance of power?
Am I acting out authority that has hurt me in the past? How does it impact my current relationships?
From this view, it’s easy to see how our ‘fear of authority’ is not vital at all… and that working together to uphold fundamental human rights begins with accepting and allowing ourselves to stand in our own authority, which ironically isn’t personal.
Perhaps moving into the Sleeping Phoenix will bring this concept to the forefront of our lives, individually and collectively.
Let’s watch and see.
